Hey there, fellow pattern lovers! Ever wondered how those quirky, colorful designs make their way from a blank canvas to a beautifully crafted pattern on fabric, stationery, or your favorite mug? Today, I’m pulling back the curtain to show you exactly how I take a doodle and transform it into a unique surface pattern.
Whether you're an aspiring designer or just curious about the process, I hope this playful journey inspires you to look at art and patterns with fresh eyes.
Step 1: Spark of Inspiration – Finding the Theme
Creating a pattern always starts with a spark. It could be a fun color combo I see on a walk, or even a quirky phrase that pops into my head! I like to keep it light-hearted and fun. I’ll jot down a few rough sketches and ideas, letting my imagination roam free.
Pro Tip: Always keep a sketchbook or a notes app handy! You never know when inspiration will strike.

Sometimes I find myself doodling on a napkin if I don't have a sketch book handy. lol
Step 2: Doodling Time – Where Ideas Come to Life
Next up, it's doodling time! Here’s where I go wild with pencil and paper (or my tablet). I sketch different elements that fit my theme. The goal is to create a series of small illustrations that are cute, memorable, and can work together in a cohesive pattern.
Fun Fact: Did you know doodling is actually great for creativity? It helps get those ideas flowing and keeps things relaxed!

Doodling is so fun! As I am creating this blog post, I realized this page of doodles would make a great repeat pattern. Inspiration happens all the time!! Doodle to Pattern!!
Step 3: Digitizing & Color Magic – Making It Pop
Once I’m happy with my doodles, it’s time to digitize them. I photograph the sketches and bring them into my design software to start adding details and color. I really find this step loads of fun.
The colors I choose can make or break the mood, so I play around with different combinations to see what feels lively yet balanced.

This is the color palette for my latest collection Petite Parisian.
Step 4: Pattern Assembly – Turning Art into a Design
Now it’s time for the most exciting part: arranging these doodles into a repeat pattern! I experiment with different layouts, playing with spacing and balance. Some elements go together like PB&J, while others need a little adjustment to fit into the design seamlessly. This is where the magic happens as the individual illustrations blend into a pattern that feels fun, balanced, and unique.

Step 5: Final Touches and Exporting – Ready for the World!
With my pattern complete, it’s time for a few last touch-ups. I check that everything aligns well and looks sharp. Once it's perfect, I export it in various formats, ready for printing on fabric, stationery, or whatever project I have in mind.
And voilà! From a little spark of inspiration, a full-fledged pattern is born, ready to add joy and personality wherever it goes.

Why Patterns Matter – A Note from Me to You
Patterns add so much to our daily lives. They’re a splash of personality, a sprinkle of joy, and a touch of whimsy. My goal is always to create designs that make you smile, spark a little joy, or inspire a bit of creativity. And, honestly? Seeing my work bring happiness to others is the best part of what I do.
