Choosing Love and Joy over Fear

The start of a new year often brings a mix of hope and uncertainty. Many people feel the pressure to set resolutions or make big changes, but what if the most powerful step forward is simpler? Choosing love over fear and joy over worry can transform how we experience the year ahead.

Fear is sneaky. One minute you’re excited about an idea, a conversation, or a possibility… and the next you’re stuck in your head, replaying scenarios and overthinking every tiny detail. I’ve been there—talking myself out of things with “What if it doesn’t work out?” or “Maybe it’s safer to just stay where I am.”

Fear has a way of slipping into everyday moments. It shows up as hesitation, self-doubt, or the urge to distract yourself so you don’t have to feel uncomfortable. It convinces you to shrink a little, to wait a little longer, to choose what’s familiar instead of what feels true.

Most of the time, fear isn’t a warning sign—it’s a sign that something matters. That you’re standing at the edge of growth, change, or honesty. And instead of asking you to stop, it’s quietly asking you to pay attention.

You don’t have to eliminate fear to move forward. You just have to stop letting it make all the decisions. Small choices count. Saying yes when you want to hide. Speaking up when your voice shakes. Trying, even if the outcome isn’t guaranteed.

Fear may always whisper, but it doesn’t get to be the boss. You do.

Choosing love over fear helps me:

  • Be kinder to myself: Mistakes happen, and that’s okay.

  • Connect with people: Honest conversations beat awkward silence every time.

  • Take brave steps: Yes, that includes hitting “publish” or showing up to something new

  • Noticing the little wins- (even finishing a cup of coffee counts).

  • Doing things that energize me-drawing, walking, dancing like no one’s watching.

  • Surrounding myself with positivity-people who make me laugh, listening to music, or watching a podcast with an uplifting message.

Life will throw fear and stress your way, no doubt. But pausing, breathing, and remembering why love and joy makes all the difference. And yes, sometimes that means laughing at yourself along the way. I do that a lot!!

Tried tide forecast for Manila for a sunrise surf check — handy combo of sun + tide.
